A big crowd came out to the Mabee Center Thursday night to cheer on the Golden Eagles, and we’ve got one word for you: LOUD. There’s a lot of fan loyalty even though they lost.
The 12th seed Golden Eagles tackled March Madness with talons out, working hard on the hard wood floor.
“Not every day Oral Roberts and Duke are in the same sentence. Not every time you’re gonna be a prime-time television across the country at 6, 7 eastern. So just to see how a small school like us that loves God, is about the right things can be on such a great stage,” said Lorenz Ross, staff member and grad student.
“Basketball’s always been my first love since I was little so getting to watch them play is just so sweet,” said Cya Bennett, senior.
“We will put up a good fight no matter the score,” said Megan Roache, junior.
Fans said the guys are older, taller, and stronger than they were two years ago when they had a historic upset and made it to the Sweet 16 for the time since 1974.
These God-fearing Golden Eagles aimed to take down the 5th seed Blue Devils, but fans said what’s better than their game is their character on and off the court.
“The manager of the team is our childhood best friend, so Caleb is who I’m rooting for,” said Shay Bennett, senior.
“The humility of our guys and the fact that they’re willing to go game for game and just stay humble and stay locked in […],” said Cya.
“This team, they’re brothers. They’re family and you can see it on and off the court,” said Mallory Beasler, senior.
“I couldn’t be more proud as an alumni and as a current staff member,” said Lorenz.
The final score was 74 to 51, Duke.
Fans said they’re disappointed ORU didn’t pull an upset, but some said just making it this far is a win in their book.
