Hundreds of students took in some baseball at OneOk field Wednesday for the Drillers' first kid's day of the season.

Everywhere you look, students are buzzing with field trip energy.

"We're enjoying the baseball game, having a good time with friends and teacher and stuff because we worked hard all year we finna graduate," says Angelo, a Carver Middle School student.

"I remember when I was a kid right, ya know when you got on that school bus at 8:30/9 o clock in the morning and you were not going to school that day, it was a good day," says Drillers General Manager Mike Melega.

He says midweek day games give students from across Tulsa the chance to take in some baseball and maybe learn a thing or two.

"Everyday game that we do in the middle of the week when we have kids, we do a different educational program prior to the game so the kids get a little something out of it and then they get a chance to watch the drillers hopefully get a win,” says Melega.

He says about twelve hundred students are here, including a large group from Carver Middle School. For about 600 students at Carver Middle School, this game is a nice break before state testing starts.

"We just wanted to bring them out and reward them with a day where they can just come out and decompress,” says Carver Middle School Athletic Director Kevin Williams.

He threw the first pitch and thought he didn't do too badly.

"They were surprised to see me out there throwing the first pitch so it was an honor for me to be able to throw it out, I didn't hit the dirt so I'm okay," he says.

But some students gave harsher critiques.

"Coach I'm sorry if you're hearing this, but you cannot throw the ball, I'm sorry, but it was a great time watching him, but he just can't throw the ball," said one Carver student.

Pitching skills aside, Williams was just happy to see students having fun.

"Lot of smiles, I've seen kids that don't necessarily smile at school have some smiles so that's what it's all about," he says.
