While renewable energy surged past coal-fired energy in the U.S. for the first time in 2022, even clean energy isn't completely clean according to experts.
Officials said windmill blades can be as long as a football field, and when broken, most of them are buried under ground.
By 2050, the world's wind industry is expected to produce more than 47 million tons of blade waste each year, and while solar panels can last for up to 30 years, more than 90% of old solar panels end up in landfills.
"There was no planning to handle the waste, it was just going to dumpsters and you're just creating a bigger problem that doesn't need to be there," We Recycle Solar CEO Adam Saghei said.
With so much renewable waste recyclers across the nation are ramping up to take on the task, such as the company Veolia, which cuts down windmill blades and shreds them for recycling purposes.
