Owasso Police say two men accused of creating more than 50 fake IDs for real people likely got the information they needed from employment verification forms.
Investigators found the IDs in the suspect’s car, in addition to nearly 50 more documents to create even more. Officers say a WeStreet Credit Union employee who was working with one of the suspects noticed something was off and called the police.
“You could tell it was fake but they did a decent job,” said Lt. Nick Boatman, Owasso Police. “It just didn’t get past the teller at the time.”
Police arrested Sean Stephens and Kevin Cyrus after searching their car and finding the fake IDs and information to make more. They say portable printers were also discovered.
“There are over 50 people that had fake IDs made on their behalf from these two that had no idea that this was being done,” said Boatman. “Another 40 or 50 people that had their basic information stolen.”
Police say it appears the suspects were getting the information to make the IDs from documents people used to apply for jobs. Records show at least two of the victims were 16 years old.
“Unfortunately with the society and the technology that we live in today, you have to provide your information somewhere,” said Boatman. “These individuals found a place where they can collect raw data in group settings.”
Owasso Police say they have talked with at least 19 of the victims so far and are working to reach the others. They expect some of the people targeted to potentially be out a lot of money.
“Employers, be very cautious of who you put in positions that are going to be hiring or doing HR for people,” said Boatman.
