An eviction notice led to a deadly shooting involving McClain County deputies Monday evening in Purcell, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said the McClain County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve an eviction notice at a home near South 10th Avenue and West Apache Street.
The man who was at the home, 52-year-old John William Stockton, also had a warrant out for his arrest, the OSBI said.
When deputies arrived, Stockton then barricaded himself inside before deputies began attempting to negotiate, according to the OSBI.
Deputies called Purcell Police to assist them with the barricaded suspect after hostile responses, the OSBI said.
Authorities deployed both pepper spray and a taser, but they were both ineffective, according to the OSBI.
The OSBI said Stockton waved a knife at authorities before a deputy shot him.
The agencies on scene attempted life-saving measures when Stockton was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
There were no other injuries reported in the shooting.
An investigation is ongoing.
