A pit bull, known as Bonnie the Bandit, has been roaming by herself in the area of North University Boulevard and Acres Street with a leash still attached to her collar. She has been seen stealing numerous items from several nearby businesses and homes, including throw pillows, a cell phone, various toys and balls, and numerous shoes.
"Someone commented on one of my posts and said, 'I'm missing one shoe from three different pairs,'" said Allison Stampley, who has been trying to catch Bonnie ever since she saw the dog roaming the streets more than a month ago. "One of the lieutenants jokingly said he would issue a warrant for petty theft."
Bonnie even has an eye for matching items; she stole two Nike sneakers from the same pair and a trio of matching throw pillows.
"So she's got style, for sure. She's my kind of girl," said Stampley.
Given that Bonnie has a leash still attached to her collar, Stampley has been trying to seek the owner.
"Ever since (finding the dog), I started sharing posts, trying to see if she belonged to anybody or knew what happened, how she got out. And haven't heard anything," said Stampley.
In between her crime spree, Bonnie made a den underneath some shrubs along North University Boulevard. So Stampley, a member of EarthMother Rescue & Outreach, set up traps near the den to try to catch her. But Bonnie would not go deep enough into the traps to trigger their closure.
On Monday, Stampley discovered that Bonnie's string of thefts continued.
"She has a way to get out over there (to a nearby business). And that's where (Monday) morning, I found another pillow that was all torn up," said Stampley. "There was puff everywhere."
News 9 caught a glimpse of Bonnie running into a wooded area on Monday. But she was too fast to be recorded on video.
In addition to stealing numerous items, Bonnie has also stolen the community's hearts. Nearby businesses have been feeding her while people in other states have been following her story on social media.
"It really makes people laugh and brings a lot of joy to their day to hear about her shenanigans, her adventures," said Stampley.
Stampley hopes that by spreading awareness about Bonnie, people can be on the lookout for her so she can eventually be placed in a furever home. If you spot Bonnie the Bandit, message Stampley or EarthMother Rescue & Outreach on Facebook.
