A powerful storm system is set to sweep across Oklahoma overnight, bringing high winds, heavy rain, and the chance for severe thunderstorms early Tuesday.
TIMELINE: When severe weather, strong winds will move through Oklahoma
News On 6 Meteorologist Travis Meyer warns that gusty conditions, potential hail, and even isolated tornadoes could impact morning commutes, with colder temperatures and strong northwest winds following the system’s exit.
The fire danger remains elevated due to the strong winds today, despite increasing low-level moisture.
A much stronger storm system will move into the area overnight, bringing thunderstorms Tuesday morning, including severe weather threats. Storms are likely to develop west of I-35 after 1 a.m. and progress eastward, forming a squall line.
The main window of opportunity for storms for our areas of concern remains from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Most of the storms after 10 a.m. will quickly move into Arkansas or adjacent states to our east, where severe weather threats will become even greater during the afternoon.
A few leftover showers will be possible Tuesday afternoon and evening across extreme northeastern Oklahoma as the main upper-level low approaches our area.
Overnight, some additional precipitation is likely across southeastern Kansas, far northeastern Oklahoma, and southwest Missouri.
Due to the colder air aloft, some rain may change to a wintry mix in these areas. This is expected to remain well north and east of the Tulsa metro region.
The storm system tomorrow morning will have the capability of producing all modes of severe weather. The primary mode of severe weather should be damaging winds along an expected squall line feature that will move from west to east.
Some storms may be able to produce hail, and some embedded areas of rotation will allow for quick spin-ups of brief tornadoes within the line. The main threat would be damaging winds, but a quick tornado spin-up cannot be ruled out.
Cooler weather will arrive Wednesday and Thursday, then another front will quickly move into the area Friday afternoon and evening, bringing cooler and dry weather for most of the weekend.
Cooler weather arrives Wednesday, with morning lows in the mid-30s and daytime highs in the lower 50s. Strong northwest winds at 20 to 40 mph will continue for the first half of Wednesday.
Thursday morning starts near 30, with valley locations in the mid-20s. Thursday afternoon’s highs will reach the upper 50s with a lighter south breeze.
Strong south winds return Friday at 15 to 25 mph, with morning lows in the upper 40s and daytime highs reaching the lower 70s. The cold front arrives Friday night with strong north winds.
Falling temperatures Saturday and Sunday will feature morning lows in the mid-30s, daytime highs Saturday in the mid-50s, and Sunday in the mid-60s.
