One person is in custody after a bomb threat at a school in Edmond prompted a response from police.
According to the Oklahoma City Police Department, one person was taken into custody outside of Summit Middle School after becoming irate.
Officials said the person taken into custody was experiencing a mental health episode before they allegedly attacked a staff member and claimed to have placed explosives around the school.
The school said it a student's adult relative tried to check out the child, but they were denied after the child's parent was notified.
The district said the parent is not a present threat.
The school was not placed on lockdown and is operating normally.
Shortly after the police response, the school released the following message:
Dear Summit Parents & Guardians,
I wanted to take the opportunity to make you aware of a situation that occurred this morning at the school.
A relative of a student entered the front office at about 8:25 am exhibiting signs of distress and threatening behavior.
This individual assaulted a staff member and had to be detained by police personnel. This individual also made claims concerning the safety of the school campus.
At no time was the safety of our students in question. Together with our partnership with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office and the Oklahoma City Police Department, the individual was detained.
I am extremely pleased at the quick thinking and thorough action of the Summit staff members who assessed the situation rapidly and effectively in order to protect the integrity of the learning environment.
We want to assure you that the safety of your children is our top priority. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
This is a developing story.
