Del City played its first game tonight since last week's shooting at Choctaw High School. Booker T. Washington had a gun scare last week, as well.
The district increased security out of an abundance of caution.
Del City Police Major Brad Cowden says officers worked with a lot of partners in the past week to make Thursday night's game possible after last week.
“Obviously there’s anxiety that comes with this,” Major Brad Cowden with Del City Police said. “Especially if they were at the previous incident, so this just helps to alleviate some of that.”
In addition to the increased security, Del City had its weapons detectors and clear bag policy in place.
Fay Pugh is the mother of one of Del City's Assistant Coaches.
She was at home last week when she saw the news and started to worry for her son.
“He said, ‘we’re alright mama, all the children are good. We’re just trying to get up and out of here.’ So then I could say, ‘phew,’” Pugh said.
She says everything at this week’s game went okay.
“As a community we’re not going to allow this incident to deter us from continuing on with our normal, everyday routines,” Cowden said. “If we have to have extra officers here and increase the presence to make that happen, then so be it.”
Del City won their game against Booker T. Washington, 48-0.
Del City Police had help from other local agencies at Thursday’s game.
