The family of the man who was stabbed to death during a fight with his roommate said they believe something doesn't add up.

Police said 54-year-old David Blankenship died after the incident near Apache and Harvard Friday.

Investigators said they are still looking into whether Blankenship's roommate acted in self-defense.

Blankenship's family said they have evidence the attack could have been part of a plan.

"He always had a positive attitude, always good to everybody,” said Austin Jones, Blankenship’s stepson. “This is nothing like him, the story that's out there. I can't picture it; I can't see it."

Jones said he could not believe his stepdad was gone.

Jones showed News On 6 a text Blankenship shared with family that he said was from his roommate days before his death.

"'They want you to leave now, go to the safe place. If you come back, you'll no longer be around. This is your only warning.' We turned it over to the police."

The roommate told police on Jan. 5, Blankenship knocked down their door at the Apache Manor Apartments and hit her with a tire iron.

Police said the roommate then stabbed Blankenship in several places, including his back.

Jones said that does not sound like the roommate was acting in self-defense nor something that Blankenship would do.

"He was getting around, at times, with a walker or cane, didn't have the strength to lift things pretty heavy,” said Jones. “He had trouble carrying a case of soda."

Jones also said when Blankenship's brother dropped him off that night, he did not see Blankenship with a tire bar.

Police questioned the roommate, and then released her.

"I feel hurt, a little anger, we're definitely mourning,” said Jones. “All I can do is let them do their job but also, I can put his side out there. Maybe that will help them in doing their job."

The Tulsa County District Attorney’s office told News On 6 it is waiting for police to finalize their report before deciding whether to prosecute the roommate.

Blankenship also leaves behind a brother and sister who are planning his funeral.
