Tulsa's Underground Tunnels Open To Public For Limited Time

The underground tunnels of Tulsa are getting ready to open to the public once again.

The Tulsa Foundation of Architecture is offering people tours of the tunnels as a fun and educational way to celebrate Valentine's Day weekend.

The foundation said the tour includes exclusive access to tunnels. The passages connect eight downtown buildings, like the Philcade and Atlas Life Building.

Historians say the tunnels were built during the time when Tulsa was the oil capital of the world and catered to the needs of some of the wealthiest families of the oil boom.

"The tunnels specifically were built because of the threats of kidnapping. Oil barons were very high-profile people and this was at the time of the Lindbergh baby. And people were genuinely concerned that they or their families would be kidnapped and held for ransom. So these tunnels allowed them to move to various points downtown and conduct business without ever having to step outside," said Amber Litwack, Executive Director of Tulsa Foundation for Architecture.

The Tulsa Foundation for Architecture offers their tours twice a year. The tours start every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 10.
