A man who has already been given probation for drugs has been arrested again. This time, he is accused of having pounds of marijuana, a gun and thousands in cash.
Deputies say this is another example of why there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop.
The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office a deputy was driving on Highway 75 when he noticed a driver swerving across the lanes. The deputy pulled over the driver and noticed an open container of alcohol in the console.
Deputies say Thai Xiong permitted them to search his car and that led to other discoveries.
“Once he looked into the center console, he also found a bag with bundles of cash in it,” said Ashley Wheeler, Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office. “That ended up totaling more than $9,000.”
On top of all that money, deputies say they also found 3.5 pounds of marijuana in three vacuum-sealed bags. They say Xiong also had a gun in the car.
“Any traffic stop can turn into something more and I think this is just an example of what is supposedly a routine traffic stop is not really routine,” said Wheeler.
This isn’t Xiong's first run-in with law enforcement. Records show he pleaded guilty to other gun and drug charges in 2012 and received a sentence of eight years of probation.
“It’s definitely a win, it’s a win for our department,” said Wheeler. “It’s a win for our deputies who are out there doing the job, who notices a driver that’s swerving and believes an intoxicated driver and then leads to something more.”
Xiong is in jail for DUI and also faces new gun and drug charges.
