The fifth annual Big Spring Clean event is happening this weekend in Tulsa.
It is hosted by The M.e.t. and Cox Media Group. Organizers said this is one of their biggest events of the year.
The event will be at the Tulsa Fairgrounds starting Saturday morning, March 2. It's free and you may bring as many items as you can, as long as they do not have any Freon.
The Metropolitan Environmental Trust, or The M.e.t., is a nonprofit that promotes environmental responsibility by educating the public and hosting awareness and special collection events.
Bobby Schultz with The M.e.t. said events like this help keep Tulsa a zero landfill community.
Schultz said they want to keep as many things out of landfills as possible. So they encourage the community to recycle because it minimizes waste, reduces consumption, and protects the environment.
“We have lots of volunteers to make it easy. So as you drive through, you don’t even have to get out of your car. We’ll have people who will take your items from you and place them in the appropriate bins, and send you on your way. So it will be a quick trip for you and you’re making a big difference to the environment,” Schultz said.
He said people can bring items that are Freon free, which are colorless, odorless and nonflammable items like old medications, ammunition, car and household batteries, plastic bags, cardboard and more.
“It’s important because number one, it saves money for people. The trash rates, Tulsa tries try to keep them as low as they can and so does all of the other communities. But if there were more things going into the trash, that’s more weight that they have to pay at Covanta or a landfill to get rid of. This way you’re making a positive impact," Schultz said.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 2. CLICK HERE for more information about the event.
