The Rogers County Literacy Council said 14-percent of adults in the area read at a 3rd grade level or below.
The literacy council said reading issues can make it hard for people to do their jobs and go about their day-to-day lives.
That's why it's launching a new initiative to help Claremore High School students improve their reading levels before graduation.
It said the new program will partner with English and English as a second language teachers to reach out to struggling students.
Leaders said about 30 students will work with the group to find where they need help and then tailor lessons accordingly.
"The goal is to be able to help those students bridge a gap where they have not received services or just kind of fallen behind before they enter the real world. We want to equip them with as many skills as possible before they enter the workforce or a higher education program," said Chelsea Carey, Executive Director of Rogers County Literacy Council.
The council said it will select kids in the program by next month so they can start lessons over the summer.
It also has programs for adults who want to work on their reading, writing, math, and computer skills.
