The City of Jenks approved a trail system that will add new trails along the Arkansas River.

The project will add more than seven miles of trails along both banks of the Arkansas River, install four bike share stations, improve trail signage throughout the trail system, and add electric charging stations.

The project also includes upgrading crosswalks at intersections along Riverside Parkway and making things more accessible for those with disabilities.

Hunter Neafus lives in South Tulsa and spends a lot of time outdoors. He says he's thrilled for more trail options closer to his home.

"I think it would give a lot more opportunity for people to actually get out there. I feel like people don't know there's a lot of space out here in the Tulsa area. It would be nice to get that word out; people get active and get outside," he said.

The total cost of the project is around $5 million.

Federal funding will take care of 80 percent of the cost, with the City of Jenks contributing more than $ 1 million; that funding will come from the voter-approved Jenks Vision Tax Projects.

Jenks mayor Cory Box says once this project is complete, people will be able to safely get to commercial and entertainment districts in Jenks.
