Experts say divorce can cause families to feel grief at the loss of the relationships they had envisioned.

Erin Engelke from Calm Waters joined News 9 with four tips to keep in mind if you or someone you know is walking through a divorce.

1. Maintain Open Communication: Encourage your child to express their feelings and thoughts about the divorce. Reassure them that it's okay to feel sad, confused, or even angry, and validate their emotions without judgment.

2. Provide Stability and Routine: Try to keep daily routines consistent to give your child a sense of security and normalcy. Consistency in schedules, such as mealtimes and bedtimes, can help reduce their anxiety and stress.

3. Practice Self-Care for yourself: Prioritize activities that help you relax and recharge, such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with friends. Taking care of your own mental health will better equip you to support your child.

4. Stay Positive in Front of Your Child: While it's important to process your own emotions, try to shield your child from any negative comments or conflicts about the other parent. Focus on creating a supportive and loving environment, but also make time to feel and express your own emotions outside of your children’s presence.
