Giving back to the community is an integral part of supporting and fostering community values, with acts of kindness re-enforcing the strength and togetherness of a community.
Goodwill, of Central Oklahoma, is doing just that by establishing a new program for the youth to take the lead of their own communities.
Sophie Schwechheimer, a representative from Goodwill: Central Oklahoma, sat down with the News 9 team on the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to share why giving back to the community is such a special part of the Goodwill foundation.
The new program, which is designed for kids aged 14-20, is meant to prepare and teach kids how to get ready for their future careers.
The two-week long program gives tips and pointers to kids on how they can best prepare for and ready themselves in a workplace further down the line.
"It can teach all of the essentials they may need to enter the workforce with confidence. From what to wear in a job interview, to how to build a resume, just teaching them little adulting things that some of these kids may not have gotten on their way to the workforce," Schwechheimer said.
Kids involved in the program will be given opportunities to participate in fun and unique learning activities like collaborative art projects and more while learning more about their own career paths.
"It's entirely free thanks to the support of our shoppers. It's primarily for kids from underserved communities, maybe that didn't have that kind of upbringing from either aging out of foster care or facing homelessness, so we found a wya to really give them a good overview of what that means to become an adult and join the workforce environment," Schwechheimer said.
