The OSU offense is primed for a breakout year, at least on paper. Alan Bowman is back along with Ollie Gordon, who rushed for 1,732 yards last year. With considerable depth at wide receiver and offensive line, the Cowboy offense looks promising.
The Cowboys' defense is expected to maintain its effectiveness with a strong pass rush and consistent big plays. Last season, they were undefeated at 8-0 when recording two or more takeaways, highlighting the importance of their defense.
The linebackers are a standout group. Nick Martin excelled with 140 tackles, six sacks, and 16 tackles for loss. Collin Oliver added 73 tackles, six sacks, and 15.5 tackles for loss. Justin Wright returns for his seventh year after a season-ending injury in 2023, having recorded 101 tackles in 2022. End Obi Ezeigbo joins from Division II Gannon University with impressive stats: 108 tackles, 25 for loss, and 14 sacks. Veterans Collin Clay and Kody Walterscheid, with 17 starts, bring experience to the defensive line, which is looking to replace 36 starts.
The secondary has key returners: Kendal Daniels, second on the team with 105 tackles, and Trey Rucker, who also had a 100-tackle season. Cornerbacks Cam Smith and Korie Black return as well. The secondary alone could contend for the most combined snaps played.
The 10 returning starters face enormous pressure to continue evolving under Bryan Nardo, now in his second year as defensive coordinator. If OSU wants to contend for the conference championship game and a potential spot in the College Football Playoff, last season's numbers must improve. Ranking 86th in scoring defense at 28.6 points per game and a disturbing 111th in pass efficiency in the wide-open Big 12 will not be enough. There were moments in 2023 when the defense appeared to be turning a corner, with players like Nick Martin leading the way. Consistency is key for 2024.
