Oklahoma's tax-free weekend is underway.
It's targeted at back-to-school shoppers buying new clothes for school.
The tax-free weekend started Friday morning statewide and runs through Sunday. It covers clothing and shoes, almost anything that is less than $100 individually.
Ashlynn Quinn is just beginning back-to-school shopping for her three children, and she says the timing of a tax holiday with a sale was perfect.
“We went to Target on a whim yesterday and saw they were having 30% off, in addition to the tax-free,” she said. “You can't beat that.”
The managers at a Super Target in Tulsa say they add staff and stock for the annual tax-free weekend.
“We're stocked on all of our high-traffic items, so we really lean into our school uniforms and a lot of kids' clothing and make sure we're getting enough product to support that,” said Ashley Hamann.
Target is one of the stores that add on sales to ensure customers looking for bigger savings come in to shop.
The tax-free weekend covers most regular clothing, including swimwear, but not athletic gear or school supplies. The discount covers state and local taxes, around 9% for most shoppers—any sales or discounts are on top of that.
“We are having a back-to-school sale, so we have 30% off kids' clothing and shoes,” Hamann said.
Quinn said she wasn't sure how she was going to spend this weekend, but considering it's the next to last weekend before school starts for her children, she's hoping to wrap it up.
“Anything school-related, school clothes, shoes, backpacks.”
The tax-free incentive also applies online, so any online order of clothing is also supposed to be tax-free.
It's important to check and make sure and call customer service if it's not.
