A 20-year-old college student from Bartlesville is back in the United States after her family says she got sick and started having seizures while vacationing at a resort in Cancun, Mexico.

Her family says they’ve paid more than $60,000, between getting her home and for her treatments in Mexico and the U.S.

Zara Hull was only in Mexico for a full day before she says she’d been drinking by the pool, then had a glass of water, and immediately passed out.

She woke up in a hospital and her family says doctors demanded $10,000 before they would even treat her and kept asking for thousands more to keep her alive.

Hull is a college student at Oklahoma Christian University who went to Cancun Thursday with her boyfriend and four other friends.

After she passed out, she started having seizures and was sent to a hospital in Cancun, where her mother says Hull was heavily sedated and intubated.

"It's so scary because, there's times, like am I going to make it out of this?” said Hull. “I've asked, am I going to make it out of this, am I going to die? What's going to happen? Because I don't know."

Rilee Works, Hull’s mother, says the hospital requested $10,000, and then later requested $17,000 more to continue treatment or $7,000 grand to release Hull, without even removing her tubes.

"When I got to America, my mom had them check my body for any incisions to make sure I had all my organs,” said Hull. “If they didn't pay the money, I was going to be out on the street, dead. That was going to be the end of the story."

Her parents paid nearly $30,000 to fly her back to the States by medical evac.

Now, Hull is at a hospital in Dallas.

Doctors there haven’t figured out what happened or what could have caused the seizures.

"We don't have a lot of answers, we don't know a lot, we don't know what she was given in the hospital down there, we don't know what she was given at the resort,” said Works.

Hull is still having seizures, but she is getting better each day

She and her family are thankful for all the support.

"I am beyond blessed that everyone is reaching out,” said Hull. “I do not care about the money. I care about the prayers, I care about everyone praying for me, the churches getting together and praying for me."

Hull says she hopes before other people go on vacation, that they will do their research about where they’re staying and how to get help if they need it.

There are several GoFundMe accounts to help Hull’s family with medical and evacuation expenses, you can find those HERE and HERE.
