Two Families React To Wednesdays Clemency Recommendation

Emmanuel Littlejohn, an inmate on death row in Oklahoma, was recommended clemency after making a final plea one month before his scheduled execution. 

The brother of Kenneth Meers begged the board to move forward with Littlejohn's execution.

"We deserve to have our lives back and carry the good memories with Kenny if that's possible," said Bill Meers, the brother of Kenneth Meers.

Kenneth Meers was 31-years-old when he was in the convenience store Root-N-Scoot when two men, including Littlejohn, robbed him. Meers was shot in the face after charging at the robbers with a broom.

Littlejohn was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death in 19194, and again in 2000.

On Wednesday in a final plea, Littlejohn admitted to the robbery but said he did not kill anyone.

Attorney General Gentner Drummond left the hearing saying " My office intends to make our case to the governor why there should not be clemency granted to this violent and manipulative killer."

Littlejohns family hopes the governor accepts the board's recommendations to let him live.

"The lord has seen so much of me, he won't want to talk to me for awhile. I have prayed and prayed and prayed,' said Ceily Mason, Littlejohn's mother. "He was young and foolish. he has grown up, and older, he deserves a chance."

While the Littlejohn family thanks God for this second chance, the Meers family walks away with different emotions

" I don't have the same trust in people ... I question God daily," said Bill Meers.

A spokesperson for the governor's office says the process will be consistent with every other clemency request. The governor will meet with the victims' families, prosecutors, and defense attorneys before coming to a decision.
