People living in the Collinsville school district will soon vote on a more than $95 million bond proposal. The superintendent says the district is in desperate need of new buildings and more classrooms to keep up with the city’s growth.

The money would go toward expanding the high school and adding two new schools for Pre-K and fifth-grade students. New storm shelters would be included as part of the construction.

Funding would also go toward student transportation, athletic field improvements, and new band uniforms and instruments.

Collinsville Schools Superintendent Jeremy Hogan says the 3% tax increase is a small price to pay to set the district up for success.

“Essentially, if your home property’s valued at a half million dollars, you’re looking at $15 a month,” Hogan said. “That’s a couple of cups of coffee a month.”

Hogan says enrollment has exceeded capacity across the district. Temporary classrooms are being built with just two days until the start of the new year.

“We’re trying to take advantage of everything we have available here,” Hogan said. “We’ve basically tapped out what we have without bringing in portable buildings or being able to build new facilities and classroom wings.”

Hogan says enrollment has grown from roughly 2,800 kids to 3,200 kids in the last four years. Some parents have noticed the growth.

“I’ve got two little ones that are going to be in the Collinsville school system for several years now,” said Christina Chavez, a mother of four Collinsville students. “I think that going forward, they’re going to need the room. We need the space. It’s just so crowded right now in the schools as it is.”

If passed, Hogan says construction could start as early as next spring. New classrooms could be available in the next two to three years.

Election Day is August 27. More information on the bond can be found HERE.
