A job in law enforcement is a goal for many.
“I think every kid has a dream of being a police officer at some time,” said Larry Jones.
That dream is now one step closer to reality for Jones.
He attended the Tulsa Police Department’s Career Exploration Day with a desire for change.
“I’ve always wanted to work with the community, with people, and just be an advocate or help, and I decided it’d be a good career choice,” he said.
Jones says he’s been a bricklayer for the past 15 years, but it wasn’t fulfilling him.
“I kind of felt like I was just settling and I felt like I needed to reach for something higher,” he said.
Officer Troy Honeycutt says through the event, the department aims to help people like Jones discover their full potential.
“The opportunities are endless,” he said.
And possibly find a role for them in their department.
Officer Honeycutt says many people don’t realize just how deep the Tulsa Police Department goes and they hope to show that through the event.
“We have over 60 specialty units on this department, so you can definitely move around,” he said.
Jones isn't sure what kind of officer he wants to be just yet.
“As far as a specific one, no, I’d be open to just about anything,” he said.
But he says he knows he has big goals and hopes to make that childhood dream come true … and that starts with testing for the Tulsa Police Academy next week.
“I’m getting close and I’m just excited,” Jones said.
