A Collinsville teenager was killed, and several members of another family were seriously hurt in a car crash late Saturday on Sheridan at 136th Street North.

The 16-year-old boy, a Collinsville High School junior, died in the crash. Three people in another car, including two well-known parents and a child, were injured. Everyone involved is from Collinsville.

“It’s a tough day because we are such a close community,” said Scott Kiker, principal of Collinsville High School.

Classes had just started the previous Thursday at Collinsville schools, and the crash involved three students and two parents known within the community.

“We have an amazing counseling team here to take care of our students and staff. Our staff is doing what they can for our kids and showing up for them, but on the side, they’re hurting too,” Kiker said.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the teenager was driving a pickup when he ran a stop sign and was struck by an SUV. Both vehicles went off the road and hit a power pole, bringing it down.

The two parents in the SUV suffered significant injuries, and one of the two children in the vehicle was also injured.

The intersection is not a four-way stop, and the crossing traffic does not stop, with a speed limit of 40 miles per hour. In the wake of the crash, the community is urging the county to improve safety at the intersection. For now, however, the focus remains on raising support for the families affected by the crash and grieving over the loss.

“The worst fear as an educator is losing a student,” Kiker said. “We treat all these kids as our own. Many of us have kids here, so we see them as friends. We’ve watched these kids grow up.”

Funeral arrangements for the teenager are pending. Online fundraisers for both families are underway.
