On National Dog Day, not every dog is celebrating in a loving home. The reality is many are in need of help.
Tulsa SPCA’s mission is to provide that help. And CEO Mindy Tiner says last week, her staff was called for a big rescue.
“They went to the property, they found a lot of dogs,” she said.
34 dogs, to be exact — including newborn puppies — were rescued near Poteau after the person trying to care for them passed away.
Tiner says this is the third large rescue they’ve done in just two months.
“I think a lot of times, people are good Samaritans, and they’re in a rural area, and animals get dumped,” she said.
She says her staff originally agreed on only taking in 15, but after seeing their conditions, they had a change of heart.
“We knew that we needed to bring them all back,” she said.
She says the dogs have various health issues, ranging from skin conditions to parasites, and they hadn’t eaten in 5 days.
“They all had fleas and ticks,” said Tiner.
The rescue, already at capacity, is now calling on the community for help.
“We would love Purina One dry dog food and wet food; puppy food would be good,” Tiner said.
While donations are appreciated, Tiner says her main hope is to get all 34 dogs into homes where they can experience the love she wishes they’ve been able to have their whole lives.
“Their attitudes are great, and so I hope that that’s going to mean they move through the shelter really quickly,” she said.
All dogs from this rescue that are available for adoption are listed on Tulsa SPCA’s website here with a C next to their name.
Tiner is also encouraging people to get involved through fostering. You can make a donation through their website as well.
