A nonprofit that repairs houses for families in need is fixing up the long-time home of a Tulsa couple.
“Kids grow up here and left, and me and her, we're still here, and it's good to have a place to call home,” said Ernesto Galvez.
Ernesto and his wife Eva have lived in their Tulsa home for 34 years. They enjoy gardening, being outside, and having family over to visit.
But, as time passed and the couple got older, the house didn't hold up.
“My stairs were having trouble, and I didn't have no rails to grab; I didn't need it back then. I was jumping, but now I need something to grab,” Ernesto said.
After the couple filled out an application for Revitalize T-Town, the nonprofit began repairs.
They've fixed the roof and the patio stairs, added a ramp and new kitchen floors, and switched out the tub in the bathroom to a walk-in shower.
CEO Jennifer Barcus-Schafer says Revitalize T-Town has helped more than 2,800 families since it began in 1997.
She says helping families in need never gets old.
“I think that not having to worry when they go get their mail or go out and check their garden is just a level of peace that everyone deserves to have,” she said.
Ernesto and Eva say they've been praying for something like this for years and are beyond grateful, and they can't wait to make more memories in their house for years to come.
“Very happy, and we give thanks to the Lord for putting us with that kind of company; she thinks they are angels that came and helped us around,” Ernesto said.
“Oh yeah, I believe in angels,” said Eva.
Revitalize T-Town hopes to have everything done by next week.
