Brent VanNorman finished just a few hundred votes behind candidates Karen Keith and Monroe Nichols and he only joined the race about three months ago.
On top of that, he didn't put out a paid advertisement until Aug. 4 and still came that close to the runoff election.
“We're disappointed, we certainly didn't get in this race to finish third, but it is what it is. Congratulations to Monroe Nichols and Karen Keith for the job they've done. I wish them the best, but I would love to thank all our volunteers. We were in this race for 90 days, and my opponents were in it for over a year, and yet, we had no name recognition when we started this race, and we came within a razor of being in the runoff. And so I'm so proud of our volunteers. I'm so thankful many of them will be lifelong friends. They came around us. They supported us. They stayed up all night, last night, getting signs around. So I'm forever indebted to them, and I just really appreciate them,” VanNorman said.
When asked what's next for his political career, he said he's taking time to assess after tonight's election.
“I'm not sure about that,” VanNorman said. “We'll take some time to assess. Right now, what I want to do is help other candidates who are running in November, I want to come alongside them and do whatever I can to get them over the finish line, and then we'll do an assessment and see where we go from there.”
