A Claremore woman is in jail Monday night, accused of shooting and killing her boyfriend inside their home.

Crystal Stanfield, the suspect, told police she was attempting to commit suicide on Sunday when she accidentally shot Kevin Theard. However, authorities say her story does not align with the evidence found at the scene.

According to Claremore Police, Stanfield and Theard had been drinking and using drugs the previous night.

“Emotions and being high or intoxicated under alcohol or the cocaine that they had, plays a factor in decision making,” said Lt. Matt Rice of the Claremore Police Department.

Police reports indicate that Stanfield called her family on Sunday morning, telling them she had killed Theard. Her family then contacted the police. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Stanfield on the porch and Theard dead in their bed, covered by blankets.

The arrest report states that Stanfield claimed she and Theard had been fighting. She said she retrieved a gun with the intent to kill herself, but when Theard tried to grab it, her finger was on the trigger, leading to the fatal shot under his chin.

However, police say the evidence does not support her account. The entrance wound was close, indicating hard contact, which is inconsistent with Theard leaning over the bed in a struggle.

“If there was a struggle, you know, things would be strewn about, or they would be in a different position most likely than just laying down in bed under covers. It just looked like, you know, a normal, typical person going to sleep,” Lt. Rice explained.

Lt. Rice also mentioned that the blood pattern did not match Stanfield’s story, and he does not believe Theard was moved after being shot.

“He's like 6'4, 280 pounds. He'd be very difficult to move,” Rice said.

Stanfield has been booked into jail for first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
