Jenks Police say a drunk driver slammed into one of their patrol cars while officers were working a wreck on Highway 75.
The police chief says this is another example of people not moving over when they see flashing lights on the side of the road.
“It's always a very paralysis, very dangerous situation, more than one time we've gone diving over that guardrail,” Chief Jason Jackson said.
Jackson says officers were working a wreck, and patrol cars were spaced out, to create a safe place for everyone to work, but the driver of a van still ended up crashing into them.
The driver of the car is Vungh Cin and was arrested for driving under the influence and child endangerment because he had children in the van.
Jackson says even though it's the law, people are not moving over when they see flashing lights on the side of the road.
He says drivers need to pay attention, slow down, and let people move over.
“When people are approaching, instead of giving people space to move over, they will rush to get by and get out of everybody's way, trapping cars over in that lane,” he said.
Jackson says the most important thing is that no one was hurt, but this particular patrol car was special to the department.
It used to belong to Sgt. Brian Crain, who passed away a few years ago and meant a lot to the officers.
“We've been preserving this car as long as we can because it means something to the officers and the community,” he said.
Jackson says it looks like the patrol car will be totaled.
