The Junior League of Tulsa is committed to ending the cycle of poverty and ensuring basic health care for all.
This Thursday, they are hosting a special event called “Find the Good Day” to tackle the issue of period poverty in the Tulsa community.
Loree Faucett, a member of the Junior League, explains that Find the Good Day is a new initiative through the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI). The goal is to shift the focus away from challenges and instead, celebrate the positive impact the organization has already made.
“It's really about taking a step back from the community efforts that we are already doing and not focusing on the bad but thinking about the good, thinking about what we already have accomplished and what we have the impact to do,” Faucett said.
For the Tulsa chapter's Find the Good Day event, they will be hosting a feminine hygiene drive to help address period poverty in the area. Ashley Beck, another Junior League member, shared that studies show one in 14 women struggle to afford these essential products, and one in three women face this challenge.
“That just really means people are missing school; they're missing work, and it's just really having a negative impact on their health,” Beck explained.
The feminine hygiene drive will take place Thursday, Sept. 19th, from 12:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Walmart located at 111th and Memorial in Tulsa.
Community members are encouraged to stop by and donate feminine products or make a monetary contribution. Even a $5-$7 donation can significantly impact someone's life.
Those who can't make it to the event can still get involved by sharing the Junior League of Tulsa's social media posts or visiting their website to donate directly.
“Find the Good Day is really for everyone. It is to just celebrate what is good in Tulsa,” Faucett said. “So you can use our graphics, absolutely you can share our post. That's a great way to do it.”
By coming together as a community and focusing on the positive, the Junior League of Tulsa hopes to make a meaningful impact in the fight against period poverty and ensure that all individuals have access to the basic necessities they need to survive.
