The Department of Corrections put Emmanuel Littlejohn to death just after 10:15 on Thursday morning for the 1992 murder of Kenneth Meers.

The Meers family is thanking prosecutors and the DOC for executing Littlejohn. Attorney General Gentner Drummond read a statement on behalf of the family after the execution.

“They wanted to convey their appreciation for the prosecutors of Oklahoma County, the criminal appeals team of the Oklahoma Attorney General's office and the support team of the AG's office as well,” Drummond said.

The state pardon and parole board recommended clemency for Littlejohn, but it was up to the Governor to commute his sentence. In a statement, the governor said it was a very difficult decision, but he chose not to pardon Littlejohn.

“As a law and order governor, I have a hard time unilaterally overturning that decision.” Today, justice for this life lost was carried out. I hope this brings closure to the families impacted by this murder."

Emmanuel Littlejohn’s sister was outside the prison when the execution happened. She called out the governor for his decision.

“Thou shall not kill. Quit telling people you’re a Christian and a man of God. God’s got a special place for you, and I tell you it’s not glory. I won’t see you in glory, but I’ll see my brother there again,” said Augustina Sanders.

Protesters against the death penalty were also lined up during the execution and said they were disappointed with Thursday’s outcome.
