Athletes and bodybuilders use strength training to reach elite status for their professions but trainer Michael Wittig explains how anyone can benefit from regular strength training.
In fact, everyone - from seniors to busy parents - can reap the rewards of incorporating some form of strength training into their fitness routines.
"A lot of people think of lifting weights as just for athletes or young guys and girls trying to build muscle," says Wittig. "But there are so many benefits to strength training for people of all ages."
One key advantage Wittig highlights is the role of strength training in weight loss and maintenance. When people lose weight through diet alone, they often shed valuable muscle mass along with fat. This can make it harder to keep the weight off long-term, as a slower metabolism makes it easier to regain those lost pounds.
"Having a little bit more muscle, I'm not talking about huge, just a little bit. It's a little tightness, a little bit more shape. It helps keep your metabolism boosting a little bit more," said Wittig. "It makes it easier for your body to burn faster, and it helps you to burn calories a little bit faster."
But the benefits of strength training go well beyond just weight management. Wittig notes that regular strength training, even just 30 minutes a few times a week, can also lower the risk of serious health issues like diabetes and heart disease.
"It helps with blood flow, reduces inflammation, and can even improve mental wellness - which is so important, especially for younger generations dealing with the impacts of COVID-19," he says.
For seniors, strength training offers additional advantages, such as preventing osteoporosis and improving overall mobility and balance. And the best part is, you don't need a gym membership or fancy equipment to get started.
"I did a program with my kids once we were lifting cans, cans of beans, and just balls, and things they had at the house. So just something that's a little challenging. It doesn't have to be all out weightlifting like I do, just something to challenge yourself, just a little bit."
So whether your goal is to lose weight, improve your heart health, or simply feel stronger and more energized, don't overlook the power of strength training. With a little creativity and consistency, everyone can reap the surprising benefits.
