Bringing new life into the world can be pretty hard. That's why the Tulsa Health Department is hoping to help make the transition to parenthood as smooth as possible.

More than 400 pregnant parents and families with babies are expected to come out today and have the chance to visit with several vendors to gain helpful parenting information.

There will be several classes covering a range of topics like safe sleeping patterns, breastfeeding and more.

There is also a special area and resources specifically catered to the dads.

Byron Dixon is the fatherhood coordinator at the Tulsa Health Department and says this event is all about helping first-time parents navigate having a child and giving that child the best start in life.

“We just want our babies to come out healthy and we want them to be as safe as they possibly can be when they are here, understanding that we have a high infant mortality rate here in the state of Oklahoma, we want to do our part to curb that and to diminish that as much as we can with these educational pieces and resources that we’ll have at the baby shower," Dixon said.

The free event is taking place at Tulsa Health Department's North Regional Health and Wellness Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
