A woman in Pryor has been creating hay sculptures for six years, and they’ve become somewhat of a tourist attraction.
The gravel roads are often quiet—not much but cattle and the occasional car going by. But among the fields, there is a reason to stop.
Lesa Ritchie has turned bales of hay into Snoopy, his best pal Woodstock, and a giant rocket ship.
“I think I’ve gotten it down to a science at this point,” she said.
The Astronauts—or the As-STRAW-nauts, as Lesa likes to call them—are not her first hay installation.
“Judah was my favorite. He was a big huge lion; he drew a lot of attention. I did ClareBALE, which was a big scarecrow, and I did one of myself and the farm and one of my dogs another year.”
Every year, families have come from all over Oklahoma and beyond to see what Lesa comes up with.
“I have some ladies that come every year from Missouri, and I always hope I’m outside or I can see them so I can say hi,” she said.
This year’s theme came from her muses—also known as her grandkids.
“My grandsons love outer space, and my granddaughters love Peanuts, and I thought to put them together and did my research. He really is a representative of NASA. A stuffed Snoopy went up with Artemis, the flight, so it worked out just perfect.”
You never know what you might find when you take the chance to slow down.
“I just wanted to do something fun for somebody else and bring a smile,” said Lesa.
