Lots of improvements have been made at the Tulsa International Airport over recent years.

Some of the changes have been cosmetic like the new color panel art installation. That project cost $250,000 and was finished this summer.

There's also a new hotel with room for more than 100 guests that opened last December.

The airport has also recently added a discovery lab play area for kids, private rooms for nursing mothers and people with sensory sensitivity along with direct flights.

Federal Grant To Help Replace Tower

The federal government has added a $13 million grant for the new tower at Tulsa International Airport, increasing the federal share of the $110 million project. Tulsa Airports CEO Alexis Higgins said Friday about $11 million in funding was still needed, but she expected it to come from local funding, through fees charges to airlines.

"$13 million was just incredible," she said about learning the grant had been awarded as part of a larger package for airports nationwide.

The money will help build the 255' replacement for the aging tower at TIA, which is too short and small for modern needs. The contractor on the project is preparing to pour the foundation and the tower should open by 2027, according to airport officials.

Airline travel is on the increase, and last week, Tulsa set a new record for off-peak travel with 43,919 passengers screened by TSA.

Another major project underway is a screening facility for international travelers, which will allow airlines to offer direct flights from other countries. The $41 million building will also add another domestic gate and will open in 2026.

Higgins said design work is underway for a convenience store and gas station, that will be built on Virgin Street, between the cell phone lot and Fine Airport Parking.

Future Projects

Some more future projects at the airport include improving the entrances.

The airport is getting rid of the revolving doors in favor of automated sliding glass doors.

It's also adding a nearly $3 million lounge for American Express and priority pass members.

It will seat 62 people and offer food and drinks and should be open before the end of the year.
