There are two plans; one for safety on streets, another for trails. INCOG wants input from the public to make both safer.

Traffic crashes have caused more than 4,000 severe injury or deadly crashes in Tulsa and four surrounding counties, according to INCOG.

"We believe that one fatality is one too many. One serious injury is one too many," said INCOG director of transportation, Thomas Dow.

INCOG hopes one of their plans will help to improve traffic safety in those counties.

"Part of what we're looking at with the local road safety action plan is what things do we need to do to make the city streets and the county roads as safe as possible using what we know today about how to make roads safer," said Dow.

He said they use information from crash reports to determine ways to make the roads safer, but they don't have information from near misses.

"What we need to hear is what experiences have you had using the transportation system, whether it's city streets, county roads, the trail network or whatever, and what things do you think that we could do at the government level to make it safer for you to use the system," Dow said.

The other plan INCOG is working on is the GO! Plan Regional Bicycle, Pedestrian & Trails Master Plan.

"About 20% of the traffic fatalities in our region in 2021 were pedestrians and bicyclists, which is very disproportionate from the mileage traveled by walking or bicycling within the region," said Dow.

The goal of INCOG'S GO! plan is to promote healthy lifestyles by increasing cycling and walking safety and convenience. Dow said even though they are two separate plans, they go hand in hand to inform each other and keep all of the Tulsa region safe.

INCOG will be holding public meetings around the region October 28th-30th for people to attend and learn about each of these plans and share feedback. Times and locations are listed below:
