Over 200 new laws passed by the state legislature go into effect on Friday across the State of Oklahoma.
With a total of 240 new laws taking effect, the new laws range from alcohol sales to domestic violence.
Senate Bill 1211 increases the punishment for people found guilty of assault and domestic abuse in Oklahoma. According to the law, anyone found guilty of assault and battery by strangulation could face a maximum time of 10 years in prison, an increase from only three years.
House Bill 1449, also known as the Women's Bill of Rights, allows the state to define a man, woman, boy, girl, as well as male and female.
The definitions would apply to bathrooms, locker rooms, prisons, and jails. The law also defines sex as a person's biological sex at birth. Supporters of the bill say it will protect women's spaces in Oklahoma, however, those against the law say it’s an attack on transgender Oklahomans.
House Bill 3571, also known as Odell's Law, says businesses are no longer required to check for identification before selling alcohol. The law is named after a 90-year-old man who was denied a beer because he didn't have his ID on him.
Although checking for ID is no longer required, it is still illegal in Oklahoma to sell to minors, and businesses will still face penalties for serving anyone under age. However, the new law leaves it up to the establishment if they wish to check IDs or not.
