With respiratory illnesses on the rise, Oklahoma health experts say three specific viruses stand out from the rest.
According to OU Health, influenza A, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, are to blame.
Why the sudden rise in respiratory illnesses?
All three viruses are common during winter, as staying indoors to avoid the cold means close and prolonged proximity to others who may be sick, enabling the spread of disease.
Dr. Catherine Mims, an OU Health pediatrician, said while COVID-19 has significantly dropped from pandemic levels, the virus typically ramps up during the holidays.
OU Health said these numbers come from the health center's rapid testing unit, so other illnesses such as the common cold may slip under the radar. However, those types of illnesses are easily treatable.
In addition to respiratory illnesses, Mims said infectious disease specialists at OU Health are monitoring the spread of avian influenza, also known as bird flu.
What can I do to stay healthy?
"You know wearing a mask when you're sick," Mims said. "Washing your hands a ton and trying to stay up to date with winter vaccines like the flu shot."
If you feel under the weather, Mims says to quarantine and rest to give your body the energy to fight off an infection, as well as eat foods that are high in vitamin C and zinc.
Where can I receive a vaccine?
There is a list of locations, including health departments and community centers, offering free vaccines and shots for children 18 and under.
A list can be found on the Oklahoma State Department of Health's website.Be sure to ask your local pharmacy about deals and discounts as well.
