When disaster strikes, volunteers with the Red Cross are on the front lines helping Oklahomans recover from tragedy.

However, the organization says it is looking for more volunteers, saying right now is the busiest time for the organization until summer.

Jennifer Nehls from the Red Cross Disaster Action Team said they are hoping more people will join in on their mission of serving others.

"Everybody ends up facing disaster at some point in their life," Nehls said. "We all need help during those times, so it's just good to give back."

The Red Cross says the winter and spring months are the busiest, with a spike in house or apartment fires in colder months and tornadoes after the weather turns warmer.

During those times, the Red Cross says volunteers help with damage assessment, feeding the community, blood drives, and financial assistance.

How can I get involved?

The Red Cross welcomes anybody who wants to help the community and has opportunities to fit your interests and schedule.

Volunteers are extremely important to ensuring Oklahomans have what they need when tragedy strikes, as volunteers make up about 90% of the Red Cross community.

There’s a group of Oklahomans with the Red Cross looking to deploy to California to help those affected by the wildfires, as the organization offers national and international volunteer opportunities as well.
