A new Hollywood film is putting Enid, Oklahoma, in the spotlight, drawing big-name stars to the state while creating opportunities for local talent.

Martin Sheen, known for his iconic roles as President Bartlet in The West Wing and Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now, stars in the upcoming film The One. In this project, Sheen plays the role of Jefferson, a character he found meaningful and refreshing.

“I didn’t have to kill anyone or beat anyone up or curse or... do anything vulgar,” Sheen shared. “It’s always a plus.”

A Story with Heart and Purpose

The film tells the story of a young Native American boy navigating life in the foster care system. Sheen says the project addresses a critical issue in society.

“Some foster folks take these kids in for the dough and don’t offer them a true family experience,” Sheen explained. He hopes the movie will inspire audiences to reflect on the foster care system and consider becoming foster or adoptive parents.

“If people are encouraged to either be foster parents, that’s a great blessing, and everybody benefits. To adopt, that’s the ultimate,” Sheen said.

A Local Connection

This marks Sheen’s first time filming in Oklahoma, and he found an unexpected connection on set. Much of the crew consisted of students from Oklahoma City Community College, where the late Frederickson, the Oscar-winning producer of Apocalypse Now, helped transform the state’s film industry.

“I had no idea that [Frederickson] was here and that he was so influential,” Sheen said. “Now I’m seeing the result of his contribution—these kids, and so many of them, are on this show.”

Enid’s Hospitality Shines

Sheen also enjoyed exploring the local community, including a visit to the Boomerang Diner. “I had one of those suppers that you don’t talk about calorie-wise,” he joked.

Oklahoma's Film Industry Grows

Filming for The One wrapped this week, with crews working in Guthrie, Enid, and Oklahoma City. The film is set for a Christmas release.
