A suspect in a Clinton homicide was killed in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday after troopers attempted to take him into custody, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI)
The Clinton Police Department says it requested OSBI to assist in a homicide investigation after officers responded to a shots fired call just before 12:30 a.m. at an apartment complex near South 28th Street and West Hayes Avenue.
Authorities said the victim, identified as 32-year-old Jesse Mendoza, was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound and later died from his injuries.
During the investigation, OSBI agents said they identified 28-year-old Joseph Tyler Layton as the suspect, and the Custer County District Court issued a felony arrest warrant for him.
Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers located Layton in Clinton and initiated a traffic stop. The encounter ended in an officer-involved shooting, according to OSBI.
Investigators said Layton was in possession of a handgun.
Troopers and medical personnel provided life-saving measures, and Layton was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
OSBI continues to investigate Mendoza’s homicide, while the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety is reviewing the officer-involved shooting.
