Onychomycosis, commonly known as a fungal nail infection, affects both fingernails and toenails, causing them to become thickened and yellowed. While this condition is generally not dangerous, it can be bothersome and make nail trimming difficult.
Dr. Lacy Anderson explains that fungal infections typically take at least three months to resolve, and sometimes even longer. The most common treatment for onychomycosis is terbinafine, the generic form of Lamisil, which is taken daily for three months. In some cases, the treatment duration may be extended for an additional three months.
For those looking for a topical solution, Jublia is another option. This treatment is painted onto the affected nail daily and requires up to 11 months of use.
Dr. Anderson emphasizes that while these infections aren’t harmful, they can be unsightly. The goal of treatment is to encourage the growth of a healthy, pink nail from the base of the nail bed. Fungal infections of the nail are more common in the elderly and individuals with compromised immune systems or chronic conditions such as diabetes.
