The shelves at the Salvation Army food pantry may be a little bare right now, but that will all change this weekend with CANstruction.

“CANstruction is actually an international event that happens in multitudes of different cities across the globe,” said Annie Perkins with the Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma.

It’s a friendly yet fierce competition between local engineering and architecture firms building huge structures out of cans in a 10-foot by 10-foot space.

“They’ve done trucks, they’ve done cranes,” said Perkins.

The contestants provide the cans for the displays, which are all taken to the Salvation Army after the competition to help local families.

“Collectively, they are providing us with nearly 10,000 can goods and essential food items,” said Perkins.

Winners of the competition are voted on by the community, through the Salvation Army’s Facebook page or in person.

“We would love for the community to come out and join us, we’ll be having free hot dogs, popcorn, and just a really great time to come out and see these amazing structures,” said Perkins.

CANstruction is Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 at the Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Center at 2908 SE 44th.

“Additionally, all of the proceeds that we raise from this event are going to benefit the programs that we offer at our Red Shield Youth Center,” said Perkins.

The entire event is to help Oklahoma families in need

“All of it stays local to bless our community,” said Perkins.
