In a statement Monday, The University of Central Oklahoma said they’re assisting the coach in the process.
911 caller: Swerved across all lanes, in front of all cars, swerved again and jumped the curb. He was driving on the sidewalks and just slammed on the brakes .
Thursday, just after 5 p.m., calls to 911 reported an erratic driver.
911 caller: Somebody can go check them out, see if they're drunk or something, but figure it would be a good idea before they cause a huge accident.
On the dash cam video, an officer locates Dorrel's vehicle in the middle of a road.
Police: Hello, how are you?
Dorrel: Good.
Police: Everything all right?
Dorrel: Yes
The officer reported Dorrel had difficulty communicating, his speech was slurred, smelled of alcohol.
Officer: Let me ask you this, how much alcohol have you consumed today?
Dorrel: None.
When pressed, Dorrel told the officer he was going through a tough time.
Officer: Are you having a rough time at home is that what’s going on?
Dorrel: Yes, it’s very rough.
Officer: Okay, I’ve been married, I’m divorced now, but I understand its stressful especially when you’ve got kids involved .
Dorrel: Very stressful.
Dorrel later refuses to exit his vehicle.
Officer: I'm giving you a lawful command to step out of the vehicle.
Dorrel: Nope.
Officer: Are you refusing to step out of the vehicle?
Dorrel: I am.
Police assisted Dorrel out of his vehicle.
Police: Put your phone down and step out of the vehicle, step out or im going to pull you out.
Refusing a sobriety test--- Dorrel became agitated with another officer.
Dorell: Do you have your bodycam on? Yes, or no?
Arrested and taken to jail---Dorrel apologizes. He later thanks a policeman for the way he handled his arrest.
Dorrel: I appreciate you.
Officer: Yes sir.
Dorrel: No, seriously. The way you processed me you could have slammed me on the ground, and you didn’t. I appreciate you.
UCO officials said Dorrel expressed regret and took responsibility for his actions. The university also said they were evaluating options to hold him accountable.
In the meantime--an associate head coach will lead the football program.
Dorrel finished his fourth season as head football coach at Central Oklahoma in 2024. He was also named the 14th head coach of the historic program in December 2021, according to UCO athletics.
UCO officials released the following statement on Monday in response:
"We are evaluating options to hold Coach Dorrell accountable in this situation. His actions are not consistent with the standards and expectations we have for members of the Broncho community. He has expressed regret and is taking responsibility for his actions, and we are assisting him with getting the help he needs. For the time being, Associate Head Coach James Curlee will lead the football program."
