An Oklahoma City nonprofit is hosting an event on Friday to increase literacy in adults.
The Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch spoke with Community Literacy Centers Executive Director Sharon Glover to learn more about Friday's event.
Q: Tell us a little bit about Community Literacy and just how it impacts us.
A: Community Literacy has been in Oklahoma City for 38 years. We have been a United Way organization for 32 years. What our mission is, basically, to eradicate illiteracy in adults because it impacts our community so much. Our workforce, just the quality of life for people, so we focus on adult literacy, ESL (English as a second language), citizenship and high school equivalency for adults.
Q: You are raising money for this; tell us a little bit about this gala.
A: Our event, we have one fundraiser each year. It's our annual fundraiser. No participants pay, and it's because of this fundraiser. We have awesome sponsors and supporters, but this is Friday at the Oklahoma History Center, and our theme is "The Magic of Literacy."
Q: How do you encourage people to come?
A: We want them to have fun, to come and engage with some awesome auction, live auction, silent auction, great food. You know, of course, drinks. That's another magic thing, drinks. It'll be really, really fun, and they can really learn how literacy impacts our community and our workforce.
Q: When is this event happening?
A: April 11 is this Friday, 6 p.m., Oklahoma History Center. You can go to our website. If you can attend, donate. Every donation goes to our classrooms. We use certified teachers. We partner with libraries and other organizations around the city, so we meet people where they are all right.
