In honor of Assault Awareness Month, college student Shelby McCaffrey is turning her personal story into a mission to help others, and she’s doing it with creativity and heart.
Fundraising With Purpose
Shelby is organizing a fundraiser to benefit the Demand Project, a nonprofit focused on fighting human trafficking and exploitation. She’s handmaking teal bracelets, keychains, and T-shirts, all available for purchase. The color teal is more than just a theme; it’s a powerful symbol of hope and strength for survivors of assault.
“If it's sexual assault [or] exploitation to whatever they're going through it, and they're gonna be strong through it,” Shelby said.
The Power of Sharing
Shelby said sharing her own story has played a big part in her healing journey, and she hopes it encourages others to speak up, too.
"My biggest thing is speaking up and speaking out is truly based on helping others because just me talking about it has helped so many others I've had so many emails and conversations with people that needed that and now just having them talk to other people as well is helping so it's just a connecting chain to help one person after another," she said.
Tying It to Denim Day
Denim Day on April 30 is a day for people to wear denim to stand in solidarity with victims of sexual violence. The day is about the unity, visibility, and support values Shelby is working to amplify through her efforts.
