Easter weekend is almost here, and families across Green Country are stocking up for holiday meals. But this year, shoppers like Tiffany Tatum, a mother of six, are seeing sticker shock at the checkout.
News On 6’s MaKayla Glenn went shopping to see what kind of prices folks are facing.
Tiffany Tatum has already done most of her shopping, spending around $200 on food and Easter activities for her family of eight.
“My budget was definitely more this year than last year,” Tatum said.
MaKayla grabbed ham, sides, and dessert — and spent just over $100.
According to Rodney Holcomb, a food economics professor, Easter meal prices are up around 5% compared to last year.
Holcomb says ham — a holiday staple — is one of the most expensive items this year, with prices up 10% year-over-year, and significantly higher since 2022.
Craving candy? You’ll pay for it — chocolate prices are up 50% from two years ago.
“Depending on what you're going to buy, you may want to change up some Easter traditions,” said Rodney Holcomb.
“Just trying to find things on sale and buying ahead of time really helps.”
Many families, like Tiffany’s, are still making the most of the holiday.
“It’s worth it to celebrate with family.”
