Experts say that taking time to play can do more than just pass the time, it can boost brain function, reduce stress, and even bring families closer together. Something as simple as a daily crossword, a five-minute Wordle, or putting together a puzzle at the kitchen table can have positive effects on one's mental well-being.

That was the message from Linda Maisch, CEO of Calm Waters, who joined News 9 to give her advice. Maisch says that the power of play should not be underestimated for kids, adults, and especially busy professionals.

"Routines are the brain's enemy," Maisch said. Maisch says that things like Wordle and Sudoku help keep the brain flexible and engaged, especially as we age.

"There's this wonderful thing called neuroplasticity," Maisch said. "Which is a really complicated word for saying, our brain continues to create these wonderful neural pathways. We continue to grow our brains, even as we get older."

A Stress Reducer and Social Connector

Maisch emphasized that brain games don't have to be complicated. She says they can be relaxing.

“You can do your Wordle. You can do your Sudoku. I can never say that word. Sudoku. I can't get it right. I can't pronounce it, but I can kind of sort it,” Maisch joked. “But we can do those things, and those are great stress reducers, too. As you're focusing in on that, the world can kind of fade away.”

Beyond the mental benefits, play also strengthens relationships. Simple things like a Wordle game conducted over group chat can bring people together even when they can't find time to meet.

"Don't you think that's a wonderful way to make those social connections that sometimes we struggle with?" Maisch said. "Especially again, as we get locked in that busyness of life."

Put a Puzzle on the Table

Maisch suggested that simply putting a puzzle on the dining room table can change a household's dynamic.

“You’ll be amazed at how family members will come together just to put a puzzle together,” Maisch said. “It exercises that brain and as well as coming together as a family to do an activity. It doesn’t always have to be these planned activities, but sometimes those spontaneous activities can create those wonderful memories as well.”

The Power of Art and Innovation

Maisch also encouraged creative expression as a way to relax and recharge.

"It spurs that creativity and innovation, and if you need no other excuse, if you're one of those people that needs a purpose, just think about that," Maisch said. "If you want to take it into your career and into your life, think about what creativity and innovation can do for you professionally as well.

Maisch ended with a reminder: "Take time to play."

It's a mindful message worth remembering, and not just for Mondays.
