Oklahoma County opens homicide investigation after lethal cellmate assault

A homicide investigation has opened by the Oklahoma County Detention Center Criminal Investigation Division after a cellmate assault turned deadly according to the Oklahoma County Detention Center.

Orenzo Byrd is accused of assaulting Clinton Pike around 2 a.m. in their jail cell. Pike was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital around 3:10 a.m. said Detention Center staff.

"Acts of violence within the Oklahoma County Detention Center will not be tolerated," Said Paul Timmons, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority. "Our Criminal Investigation Division is committed to conducting a thorough and diligent investigation. The safety and security of every individual in our custody remains our top priority, and we will continue to take all necessary steps to uphold that standard."

Pike had been in custody at the Detention Center since February 21 of this year, and was recently sentences to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections on charges of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and Assault and attery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Byrd was booked into the facility on April 11, 2025, on a charge of Robbery or Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Preliminary investigation indicated Byrd assaulted Pike according to officials, which resulted in Pike's death.

The investigation is ongoing and no further details are available at this time.
