Employees of a Miami restaurant say they feel lucky to be alive after a man shot into the business when dozens of people were inside. State investigators say the man was eventually shot by responding police officers.

"I was pretty scared."

It felt like the end to a typical Saturday night dinner rush for Kaylee Taylor until things changed in the blink of an eye. She was still serving her customers when she heard the glass shatter.

"I thought he was going to come back in here," said Taylor. "I don't even know why he did that. I don't know what his intentions were."

Taylor has been a server at Mia Bella Italian Kitchen for more than two months. She feared for her life when a shot was fired into the restaurant from outside.

"We heard more gunshots outside, so I ran up to the freezer and barricaded that," she said. "Had bread pans ready just in case."

OSBI Identifies Shooter, Takes Over Investigation

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says Michael Cook shot into the business. At this point, investigators say they don't know why.

The agency has taken over the investigation after it says Cook and police exchanged gunfire outside the restaurant. An officer shot Cook, according to the OSBI.

Cook was taken to a hospital and is still being treated, according to investigators. The agency says the Ottawa County District Attorney will determine if any charges are filed.

Customers Faced A Close Call During Shooting

Restaurant general manager Dillon Phillips says he got to the business just minutes after the shooting. He is thankful nobody got seriously hurt, but recalls some customers reacting to the shooting.

"There was a couple of customers who had full-blown panic attacks," said Phillips. "It's terrifying to be in the middle of that."

He fears things could have been much worse.

"There were guests that were trying to actually go sit on the patio but decided last second to not," he said.
